Farmer's Market and More Avgolemono

Last night a nightmare caused me to wake up at 2:45 a.m. I was dreaming that my mom was yelling at me about some new friends I had made. "I don't like the choices you're making. Your new friends are trashy!" I snapped back at her, "Well, that's what you get for moving us from Mt. Pleasant to Myrtle Beach!" HA! The nightmare must have worked up quite an appetite, because instead of shaking it off and going back to sleep, I remembered the bread I had just baked a mere 6 hours before. I dragged myself to the kitchen and starting eating a chunk of bread. I'd like to call this sleep-eating, but I was fully aware of what I was doing. Has anyone else done this? Fess up.

I was so excited about today's lunch that I almost ate it for breakfast. I took a slice of my Brown Sugar Cinnamon Bread and sprinkled it with cinnamon.
I grabbed a banana and a packet of almond butter.
I smeared the bread with almond butter and topped it with banana slices and a drizzle of honey. SO FREAKING GOOD.

After work, Mary picked up Amanda, Brooke, and me to hit up the last Farmer's Market of the season. As soon as I jumped in the car, Amanda and I traded slices of bread. She made Jenna's original recipe, while I made some changes. It was fun to try each others' - both were great! As you can see, Amanda did not forget the walnuts like I did.
The Farmer's Market wasn't as busy as I expected, which was nice. Along with tons of fresh produce, there were yummy dinner options to choose from: bbq, gyros, tacos, and burritos. I picked up a lumberjack's portioned burrito: blackened chicken, salsa, cheese, rice, and black beans.
After we ate, we browsed. Browsed = hunted for samples.

When I got home, I felt like making my very favorite soup: Avgolemono. I started making this soup last November, and have made it at least 5 times since then. It is so good. The original Cooking Light recipe can be found here, but as usual, I recommend changing a few things. I double the orzo, increase the lemon juice to 1/2 cup, and use as much fresh dill as I feel like. I highly recommend using real lemon juice and fresh dill. The flavors of both are what make this soup amazing. It's slightly creamy from the eggs, and you'll notice that overnight the broth thickens.

This is all you need:
And this is what you get:
Make this soup!! Good Night!

  5. um... yes. I have done this before... gone to bed, only to wake up a couple hours later THINKING about something (usually bread) and HAVE to have it Right Then.

at least it's usually something bread, so it doesn't really mess with my sleep. :D

if this SOUP were in my kitchen tonight, it'd probably wake me up...

  8. Wow - your farmers market is so much 'nicer' than ours are! I'm sad because I get off work and it's an hour (minimum) to drive home and by that time our farmers market is closed! Time to get a work-from-home job. My dream :)

  9. I've never snacked in the middle of the night, to tell you the truth!! I grew up in a pretty big creepy old house, and the thought of leaving bed to get a snack seemed far and dark. I just never got into the habit!!

  11. Wait, is Brown Sugar Cinnamon Bread actually bread, or is it cake? I like that I'm unsure. I mean you can call it bread, but I bet it tastes like cake... :)

  17. Your soup looks soooo good! I like soup that has a creamy base but not overly thick ... looks so good! Anything with blackend chicken in it is for meeee! As for sleep wonering-eating I do strange things in my sleep. I get crazy dreams and am def guilty of comforting myself in some sweet tooth way haha.

  20. I've never heard of that soup before but I want to try it soon! It seems like a perfect soup for the fall time-do you know if it freezes well?

Dreams that wake you up suck. Especially good ones with a naked Alex Rodriguez, bottle of baby oil and cabana that you try to go back to bed and get back into and can't. Suck it Alex.

And why does your farmers look so much better than mine? Sigh.

  22. Middle of the night snacker here!! Occasionally I'll wake up, toss and turn for awhile, and then stumble down the hall to the kitchen and rummage through the fridge until I come across something yummy to eat. I don't typically find delicious baked goods like cinnamon bread though! :)

I've never tried Avgolemono, but it's on my "must-try-someday" list. Yours looks delicious.

  26. That brown sugar cinnamon bread sounds amazing! I have done the same thing when it comes to eating in the middle of the night! I was aware that I was eating, but was almost half asleep at the same time. I guess it can't count as sleep-eating because I remember it :)
