Family Dinner Night at Crave

Before Grammy went back home to Massachusetts, we had dinner at Crave Kitchen & Cocktails. It’s always sad to see her go, but good food always lightens the mood! As my aunt and uncle hadn’t been to Crave before, I immediately suggested it for the evening.

What I love most about Crave is that their menu appeals to everyone. They take typical dinner entrees, amp them up with flavor and creativity, and voila! A menu that is sure to satisfy any type of eater. They also cater to those with special diets needs; they offer gluten-free, paleo, and Crossfit diet options. Should you be vegetarian or vegan, Chef Ganstrom is happy to serve something that is right for you. That said, no one of my family has any dietary restrictions, so we ordered straight off the regular menu.

Typically a man who enjoys his steak, my Uncle Johnny opted for the Chicken Marsala - Pan seared chicken breasts with wild forest mushrooms in a Marsala wine sauce, served over a bed of fettuccini. I think he mainly chose this entrée to see how it compared to what he creates at home. Luckily, he liked it just as much! Even Grammy who cooked for an Italian man for years said it rivaled hers.DSC00329

Grammy was very pleased with her Filet Mignon – 8 oz center cut prime filet grilled, served with a potato croquette and grilled asparagus, accompanied with a mushroom and onion demi glaze. The filet was juicy and tender, the asparagus was crisp, and the croquettes were piping hot pillows of rice. DSC00326

Gabrielle, my 11 year old cousin, excitedly ordered off the adult menu: Northern Italian Beef & Pork Bolognaise – House Ground Beef Tenderloin and Pork, stewed with tomatoes, served on a bed of Fettuccine. We all agreed this was one of our favorite dishes. Along with the herbed flavor in the meat, there was a touch of sweetness. I wish I knew the secret ingredient!DSC00327

Kelly and I opted for seafood, but don’t we always? It’s hard to say no to deliveries right from the Charleston waters. She went with the Sea Scallops – large sea scallops seared until golden brown, then served on top of a bed of rich lobster risotto and garlic pan fried green beans. You know, cooking scallops isn’t easy. One minute too long and you’ve got yourself a chewy mess. These were cooked perfectly and the risotto they were placed upon was creamy with chunks of lobster.DSC00328

I often tell Carmela, the sweet waitress who I always request, to tell Landen to “just make something delicious” or whatever it is that my body is craving. I am never disappointed. That evening I had a macadamia nut and coconut crusted filet of sea bass served atop asparagus, spinach, and sliced beets. Ahhhhh-mazing.DSC00325

When I said my family didn’t have any dietary restrictions, I wasn’t kidding. Chocolate is something that is never restricted from the table. I mean, why would we punish ourselves like that? ;) We ordered three desserts to share. My little cousin Zachary wanted the Baked Alaska – Mint chocolate chip ice cream, topped with flaming meringue, served over chocolate cake and fresh fruit with mojito syrup. The dessert actually comes out on fire. Zach got a kick out of that, but as soon as the flame disappeared, his fork was ready. This, so far, has been my favorite dessert at crave. You just can’t go wrong with the mint and chocolate combination. DSC00331

Grammy, the chocolate-obsessed member of our family requested Double fudge cake – Double layered French chocolate fudge cake with macaron almonds, topped with chocolate ganache and an almond twill cookie. This was very rich and definitely reminded me that I need to get some cavities filled. Worth it.DSC00333

Some wise person at the table (I actually think it was Johnny) ordered a fruit-based dessert: Baked Apple Crisp – Chef’s special oatmeal maple crisp topping, baked with North Carolina cinnamon apples served with vanilla bean ice cream and cinnamon reduction. I love this dessert, but I recommend it more in the fall when the weather is cooler. It gives you those warm, fuzzy feelings you have around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Or Hanukkah. Or Kwanzaa. Or any Winter day really, let’s be honest.DSC00334

I was happy that everyone was so pleased with their meals. The other night when Kelly and I were chatting she told me, “Johnny and I have been craving Crave. Pun intended.” I think we’ll be back next week!

Do you have a special dietary need or restriction?

What do you typically order for dinner? I almost always choose a seafood entrée and rarely order pasta.

Brunch at Carter’s Kitchen in I’On, Mt. Pleasant

This past Sunday, the lovely Sarah Jones of All Over It invited me join forces with her and review Carter’s Kitchen. Nestled in the I’On neighborhood, this charming little restaurant is a great spot for dining. My first impressions of the restaurant were how pretty it was inside and how welcoming the staff was. It was a beautiful day so we decided to sit on the porch and enjoy the sunshine. DSC_0278 (1024x683)

Before we were seated, we ordered drinks from the bar. While waiting, I glanced over the menu and noticed one of my biggest pet peeves: the unnecessary apostrophe. Urrrgghhhh. IMAG2473

I let my pickiness for grammar go as soon as the bartender handed us the Bloody Marys. DSC_0253 (1024x731)

The darker one to the left was made with a local product: the Charleston Bold & Spicy Bloody Mary mix. It’s thick and has a really nice kick to it. It made the second Bloody Mary taste watered down.

Then the ordering of multiple dishes began. We started with two recommendations from our server. Bruleed grapefruit with vanilla sugar:DSC_0257 (1024x731)

This was as delicious as it was beautiful! The ratio of tart to sweet was perfect and I’m now inspired to make this at home.

Biscuit Sliders with country ham, bacon, sausage:DSC_0261 (1024x683)

I had high hopes for these but the biscuits were very dry and the ham was extremely salty. The concept is cute though!

By this time, we were ready for round two: mimosas. We had a grapefruit and St. Germaine mimosa and a cranberry and Amaretto mimosa. They were both excellent. I now want only cranberry and Amaretto mimosas for brunch. See ya, OJ!DSC_0264 (731x1024)

Out of all the entrees, my heart was set on the Seafood omelet with shrimp, crab, scallops, and lobster sauce with a side of grits and toast. DSC_0269 (1024x732)

Both the texture and taste of the eggs made me question if they used eggs from a carton. Boo. The seafood stuff inside, however, was incredible. There was so much crab meat and the lobster sauce was divine. I’d eat this every weekend. The grits were fantastic – some of the best I’ve had in Charleston because of their perfect consistency.DSC_0273 (1024x683)

We also tried the Orange-Vanilla French toast. DSC_0267 (1024x731)

YUM! It had a slight hint of citrus and was perfectly crispy with a soft middle.

As odd as this sounds, one of my favorite parts of brunch was the home fries. They used red, white, purple, and sweet potatoes. So colorful and so tasty.DSC_0270 (1024x683)

Carter’s Kitchen has really great brunch items at fair prices with an even charming atmosphere. I insist you sit on the porch! The food was prepared and plated well, aside from the dry biscuits and disappointing quality of eggs. My only gripe about our experience overall was that our server was inattentive and not very friendly. Maybe I should have given her one of my mimosas…

NYC Day 3

On Sunday, Lucy and I went to brunch with Courtney, my friend from Charleston who moved up to the city a couple years ago. As of couple months ago, Courtney and her husband are Vegan, as is Lucy. Courtney found us a cute little Vegan brunch spot called Blossom. For being strictly Vegan, they had a menu full of delicious sounding meals. I opted for the French Toast with fresh fruit and tempeh bacon. DSC00284

The French toast was crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. I was nervous to try the tempeh bacon, but I ended up liking it.

Both Lucy and Courtney had the Tofu Scramble  with sautéed onion, mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes, and soy sausage. DSC00285

I wish we had more Vegan restaurants in Charleston. There were a lot of menu items I’d like to try and ultimately experiment with in my kitchen. Maybe I’ll use the menu as inspiration. Thanks, Courtney, for picking out a great spot and meeting us! :)Blossom on Urbanspoon

We also took Courtney’s recommendation to walk through Chelsea Market and pick up a cherry cream scone at Amy’s Bread.IMAG2041

I had just eaten breakfast, but couldn’t resist digging into this soft, buttery scone. It was incredible. Scones aren’t my typical go-to baked good, but I’m so glad I listened to Courtney. The girl is smart. I want to make these at home, too!IMAG2043

Sunday evening, Ben and I had a really fun dinner at Mario Batali’s restaurant, Casa Mono. First, while waiting for a table, we had a glass of wine at Bar Jamon, which is adjacent to Casa Mono. We both had the Nita, a blend of Cariñena, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. I liked it a lot.

Dinner was so exciting. We sat at the bar that overlooked the kitchen. Watching the chefs prepare everyone’s food was quite a show. They were quick, yet so particular about plating, and it showed in each dish.

Casa Mono is a Spanish tapas restaurant so we ordered several different plates.

Round 1:

Bacalao Croquetas with Orange AlioliIMG_2372

Razor Clams a la PlanchaIMG_2371

Sepia with Salsa VerdeIMG_2385

Of these three, I liked the croquetas best. They were glorified fish sticks – so light and the orange zest really added to it. The razor clams were garlicky and in a delicious olive oil. The sepia, a cuttlefish, had a chewy texture but were great.

Round 2:

Mussels with Cava and Chorizo - $15IMG_2378

Lobster with Spicy Sweet Potato and Agua de CocoIMG_2377

Seared scallops with a cherry parsnip pureeIMG_2383

Each of these plates were amazing. I avoided the chorizo in the mussels and, even without it, the broth had so much flavor. The cherry parsnip puree with the scallops was one of the best flavors I’ve had in a while. I really enjoyed the fruit + seafood pairing. This was definitely a memorable dinner, both for the incredible food and the entertainment. I so badly wanted to jump over the counter into the kitchen with the chefs. Casa Mono is a must for your (and my!) next visit to NYC.Casa Mono on Urbanspoon

Dinner would not be complete without dessert. Both of us were in the mood for cookies, so we headed over to Momofuku Milk Bar. They have some crazy desserts, including cookies, pies, ice cream, truffles, milkshakes and more. We stuck with cookies and brought home 3 types:

  • the famous Compost Cookie (pretzels, potato chips, coffee, oats, butterscotch, chocolate chips)
  • Peanut Butter
  • Blueberry & Cream (dried blueberries, milk crumbs, white chocolate)

The PB cookie was pretty standard, and while the Compost Cookie was good, it wasn’t as earth-shaking as the reviews I’d previously read. There weren’t any pretzels in it and it mostly tasted like coffee! I really liked, no loved, the Blueberry & Cream cookie.

Hall’s Chophouse

As a girl who isn’t the biggest fan of red meat, you may be surprised to hear that Hall’s Chophouse is one my very favorite restaurants in Charleston. Hall’s is a family run New York style steakhouse located on Upper King. Upon entering the dimly lit, plush restaurant, you will be immediately greeted by someone from the staff or even one of the family members themselves. And when I say greeted, I don’t mean someone says hello – you’re either getting your hand shaken or hugged. The Halls are genuinely happy to see you and appreciative of you dining in their restaurant. image

Although I honestly eat at Hall’s (mostly bar seating) about twice a month, I’m always willing to go when a friend wants to. Always. Amanda and I decided we needed a date night, and as she’s only ever eaten at the bar with me, we decided to go all out.

We started the night off with a really smooth bottle of wine. image

I recommended that we get the shrimp appetizer. It’s absolutely delicious. Crispy shrimp served in what I assume is a ginger chile sauce with a hint of heat. imageDSC00076 (1024x768)

My steak loving friend appropriately ordered filet. As soon as she took her first bite, she let out a long “Mmmm.” I had the same reaction when she gave me a sample. It was just so…buttery. imageDSC00079 (1024x768)DSC00080 (1024x768)Side dishes are served family style, aka large and in charge. Amanda chose the macaroni and cheese shown above. Dare I use the word buttery to describe this as well? Cheese, butter, cream…what else hurts my heart at the same times as it makes it so happy?

I have had almost all of the non-red meat entrees as Hall’s except for the Tuna, which was highly recommended by our server. That was an easy decision. I was most intrigued by the gastrique – this sweet, citrusy sauce did not disappoint.imageDSC00077 (1024x768)

Apparently it pays to be a regular, because Tommy sent out my favorite dessert: whiskey bread pudding. I first had their bread pudding over a year ago when I wasn’t even sure what bread pudding even was. A friend ordered it and I am so glad he did. It’s the softest piece of brioche with cinnamon and cherries, drizzled in a praline sauce. It’s so good, I get emotional. DSC00081 (1024x731)DSC00085 (1280x960)

Amanda and I had joked about being on a “date” ealrier that day. She purposefully wore a blazer, saying that she was "the man” tonight. We couldn’t resist taking a festive picture in front of the tree.

In summary,

  • Angela, our server was very sweet and attentive
  • Portions, as always, were very generous
  • Ambience is warm and very welcoming
  • They have my absolute favorite salad: the Blackened Salmon Salad
  • GET THE BREAD PUDDING

When it came time to pay for the bill, Amanda and I took advantage of Serve, a new digital payment platform that we both signed up for. With Serve (from American Express), you can organize your money, send and receive funds, and manage payment requests — all from a single, unified online account. Using her regular debit card, Amanda paid for the bill. I then logged into my account using the Serve smartphone app, and sent her a payment for my half. She immediately received the payment, and then transferred it back to her bank account, which had been linked to her Serve account. Easy, peasy! The serve system would be so helpful for larger parties – the server doesn’t have to collect multiple credit cards and the party members can send their portion of the bill to whomever pays. Check it out!
