Breaking Dawn: Part 2

Today’s the day!! Breaking Dawn Part 2 comes out TONIGHT! Amanda and I bought our tickets last week (nerd alert) and we’re so excited for the premiere!

Last year we went to the midnight showing at Cinebarre for Breaking Dawn Part 1. They had tents set up with people serving food, handing out free glow-in-the-dark fangs, holding giveaways, and doing fortune readings!

Watch the trailer and get excited!

Serious question of the day: Are you going to the premiere tonight?

Semi-serious question of the day: Team Edward or Team Jacob?   edwardjacob

The Weekend Recap

Since Grammy arrived, I’ve been spending a lot of time with the fam. On Friday, she, Auntie Kelly, and I had a girls’ evening of dinner and movies. Grammy is a messy eater, and because she piled her burger high with toppings, she felt it was necessary to wear a  bib to eat. No joke.IMAG2447

The woman is nuts and I love her.

On Saturday we went shopping and I picked up 2 pairs of shorts from Banana Republic. Reason #2985725 why I love warm weather: white shorts. I’m not sure what I’ll wear the white & silver pair with yet. Any ideas?DSC_0281 (1024x731)

For lunch, we went to the Centre Pointe Chick-fil-A, my favorite location. The love for Chick-fil-A runs in the family. Look at my cousin going to town on an Oreo parfait!IMAG2464

That evening I met up with my dear Courtney who is visiting from NYC. She made a delicious mostly local, vegan dinner for a few of us. We started with a kale salad with olive oil, lemon juice, chili flakes, garlic, and bread crumbs:IMAG2469

She also filled squash blossoms with tofu ricotta, soft tofu, lemon zest, and fresh basil. They were sprinkled with olive oil and breadcrumbs, then baked. On the side, we had baby red potatoes roasted with rosemary and oregano. All the vegetables were fresh from the Farmer’s Market! Everything was so fresh and healthy, just the way we like it.IMAG2471

Don’t you want Courtney to be your personal chef now? I do!

After dinner, we went to The Royal American for some drinks. A lot of people love this “dive bar.” As a bar hopper who can’t seem to sit still, I don’t like that it’s so far away from everything. But I was in good company!IMG_9942

I told Courtney she makes me want to be a brunette. She told me I make her want to be a blonde. Typical girls. Courtney, it was so good to see you in CHS!! And I think just being around you made my Klout score go up. ;)

On Sunday, I had brunch and a major catch-up session with the lovely Sarah. We went to Carter’s Kitchen in Mt. Pleasant – more on that in another post. I love this girl! IMAG2474

On Sunday afternoon, Courtney, her friend Stephanie, and I finally saw The Hunger Games.

Holy crap, this movie is intense! Though I didn’t care for the book, I enjoyed all 142 minutes of the action-packed movie.

Made any recent clothing purchases? What color top would you wear with those white & silver shorts?

Ever had stuffed squash blossoms? Aside from Saturday, I’ve only ever had them in Italy.

Thoughts on Thursday

I told you I was going to abuse the list format!

1. I wouldn’t call myself unfriendly, but I realize that I don’t always reach out/introduce myself to people before they do. Maybe it’s an insecurity, maybe I’m just distracted. Regardless, I want to work on this. There is a girl who goes to the same Pure Barre classes as me, and she always says hi and asks how I’m doing. Today she even remembered that I was going to the farmer’s market after Tuesday’s class and asked me what I bought. Be friendly to everyone. Say hi to people. Put yourself out there. You can make friends wherever you go. The person sitting right beside you could be your new best friend…

2. I have very little self control around chocolate. I don’t just have a sweet tooth, I have sweet teeth. My eyeballs almost popped out of their sockets when I found out that Chick-fil-A is launching new dessert items:

  • chocolate chunk cookies (!!)
  • fudge brownies
  • sundaes

3. For the past couple of months, I’ve been considering getting a dog. The only reason I’m holding back is that I’m always busy and worry that I wouldn’t have enough time to devote to a puppy. Plus, just like with men, I’m picky. I want a small to medium-sized dog, who doesn’t shed, doesn’t bark loudly, is able to run with me, and will snuggle at all times. Too much to ask? What do you guys think?

4. Rachel sent me a very exciting text message on Sunday.2012-04-08_18-51-56

My lookalike + Ryan Gosling? I won’t mind watching that. I’m halfway through the book and it’s getting more intense. Unfortunately it’s giving me unrealistic expectations for my future boyfriend.

5. I fully support marriage equality for all. I’m straight, but I watched my parents’ marriage fail and am in no rush to get married. That doesn’t mean I don’t want others who are in love to be happy. Fiona Apple summed it up perfectly in her letter to a gay teen: "A person who loves is a righteous person, and if someone has the ability and desire to show love to another — to someone willing to receive it, then for goodness’ sake, let them do it. Hate has no place in the equation; there is no function for it to perform. Love is love, and there will never be too much."love_is_love_sticker-p217740351508061768z85xz_400

Good grief this post was serious.

To recap: Smile at everyone, try the new cookie at Chick-fil-A, tell me if I should get a dog, start reading Fifty Shades of Grey, and wave your rainbow flag.

On Being a “Pescatarian”–What’s the Deal?

As of the beginning of February (the 8th, to be exact), I’ve been eating “Pescatarian style.” With an exception of one day in NYC, I have not consumed any meat or poultry in almost 6 weeks. During this time, I’ve received many questions, so I figured an FAQ post was necessary.

The most common questions I’m asked are “But what about protein?" “Are you getting Calcium? Petite girls need more you know.” and “Shouldn’t you worry that your Iron is low?” In short: Yes, I’m getting my protein. Yes, I need Calcium. No, I’m not worried that my Iron is low. There are plenty of foods with which I can get my daily vitamin requirements, but here’s how I’m doing it:

Protein: Greek yogurt, fish, quinoa, broccoli, spinach, almonds, walnuts, peas, chickpeas, black beans, peanut/almond butter, tofu, soy milk, lentils, and kale.

Calcium: soy or rice milk, collard greens, tofu, yogurt, bok choy, almonds, broccoli

Iron: soybeans, lentils, tofu, quinoa, chickpeas, black beans, veggie burgers, spinach, Brussels sprouts

Why did you decide to do this? At first it was just a sudden aversion to chicken. I rarely ate red meat before, so cutting that out wasn’t an issue. I then started to be bothered by eggs, again for no particular reason. I thought I’d just go with the flow and see what happened. I am a firm believer of listening to your body and giving it the nutrients it craves. Everything should be consumed in moderation.

What are the positives you’ve seen so far? My fruit and vegetable intake has significantly  increased. Being open to more vegetables has made me enjoy ones that I used to gross me out. Eggplant? Love it. Mushrooms? No longer bother me. Green peppers? Sure, I’ll take those too.

What’s your favorite part about this change? With less options to choose from, it’s so much easier ordering at restaurants! It has been a lot of fun trying new dishes that I would have ignored before. I know it sounds ridiculous, but as I’m typically a creature of habit, I’ve learned that sticking with “the usual” is safe, but quite boring.

What products have you tried and loved? Though I typically don’t promote frozen meals, there are times when they are convenient and not too bad for you. In the beginning of all this, I relied on these products to wean me into vegetarian/pescatarian cooking. Please watch the sodium content!

I really like, no, love Morningstar’s Spicy Black Bean Burgers and Asian Vegetable Patties.

Kashi’s  Spicy Black Bean Enchilada is damn good. The salsa and tomatillo sauce has so much flavor.

Evol Foods has great products. I’m a fan of their flatbreads and bowls. Check out these:imageimage

Disliked? I really wanted to like the Trader Joe’s Masala veggie burgers. I was a bit freaked out when I bit into one and a green bean was hanging out of my mouth. I get it. It’s a veggie burger. But that was strange.

Kashi’s Pesto Pasta Primavera was just eh. I could do without it.

The gardein chick’n filets were downright disgusting. Horrible. Awful. The texture is so bad. I never want to see these again.

Do you like tofu? Tempeh? I have had tofu prepared for me and enjoyed it about half the time. I have not tried cooking with it. Another thing is, tofu may be meat-free, but it’s still highly processed. I’ll check out tempeh once somebody recommends a good kind.

Would you consider becoming Vegan? At this point, I’m really not sure. I give major props to Vegans for their ability to restrict so many products for ethical, health, and/or environmental reasons. I like the earth, my body, and some animals are pretty cool, but I’m not waving any flags just yet.

How long are you doing this for? I have no idea, which is why I don’t really like giving myself a title. I could wake up tomorrow and want a cheeseburger. To be quite honest, I’ve had more (just 2) cravings for red meat than for poultry.

Oh, and the NUMBER ONE QUESTION people ask is…drum roll…WHAT ABOUT CHICK-FIL-A? Calm down everyone, Chick-fil-A is still getting my $ and I still love them with a huge chunk of my heart. What I’m enjoying: multigrain oatmeal, fruit parfaits,  side salads,  and fruit cups. Of course I’m still addicted to the Diet Lemonade, IceDream, and their pickles.

Last weekend, I even modified my favorite Southwest salad by getting it without chicken and adding extra black bean & corn salsa. My mouth was on fire and I loved it.IMAG1983

Just to be clear…

What I Do and Don’t Eat (Besides the obvious)

Do:

  • fish
  • Greek yogurt
  • cheese
  • a lot of nuts
  • tons of vegetables
  • some fruit
  • beans and chickpeas
  • almond butter

Don’t:

  • poultry
  • red meat
  • animal’s milk (I simply prefer almond and soy milk for their nutritional benefits)
  • eggs (but I will eat stuff that has been baked w/ eggs. I’m not sure why – it’s the actual egg that freaks me out.)

For more information, I highly suggest checking out the documentary Forks Over Knives. It’s on Netflix!

For those of you who love to read, grab your library card and check out Vegan & Vegetarian FAQ.

If YOU have any questions or comments, feel free to discuss below. I’ll answer (mostly) anything and am open to your thoughts.

Now go eat some carrots.

Chocolate chip cookies.

11. What is your weirdest injury?
Weirdest? Um, here’s a story. Before one of my best friend’s bachelorette parties, a bunch of girls and I were getting ready in a small room. While I was flat ironing my hair, one of the girls needed me to move over. I quickly grabbed the flat iron, but instead of putting the flat iron down  (there was no room), I quickly put it in between my legs, forgetting that it was ON. On both of my inner thighs I have a 2 inch scar from where the flat iron burned me. It was awful.

Sleep in (obviously), go for an outdoor/bridge run, go pick up coffee, lunch with friends, shopping downtown, wine tasting outside, dinner downtown, bar hop later…then TRIO!

15. Where do you want to be and what do you want to be doing in 5 years?
I WILL BE 32, but hopefully still acting like this.

(No, I’ll never answer that question seriously.) What else would you expect from me?

XO!

Weekend Highlights

On Friday I was still in recovery mode from NYC. You think I’m joking but I’m not. The entire weekend up there I was saying “I have jet lag you guys” even though (news to me!), you can only have jet lag if you’ve changed time zones. Did you know that? I didn’t until I said it to Kaye and she looked at me like I had two heads. I flew like 600 miles! Sheer exhaustion!

Just kidding.

So anyway, after work on Friday I went to the gym to try to  muster up energy. While there, it started crazy storming and there were tornado warnings. Let me tell you, I used this as my lame excuse not to go out. God forbid I get sucked up in one of those things on a FRIDAY!! I instead got comfortable with my boyfriend, Netflix. He’s a babe you know. I watched two movies:

The Freebie: “a young couple decides to give each other a night off, no questions asked.”

Last Night: “a married couple, apart for a night while the husband takes a business trip with a colleague to whom he's attracted. While he's resisting temptation, his wife encounters her past love.”

Uhhh weirdo genres, right? Someone pop me a prozac.

Saturday: My friend (and downstairs neighbor!)Tyler invited me to a baseball game. Buff boys in tight pants? Sure! Before going to the game, he let me try some scotch. You guys, that stuff is nasty. These bodies were not:IMAG1822IMAG1823

After telling Tyler what movies I watched on Friday, he threw a DVD at me: The Godfather, parts I, II, and III. I have work to do. (No, I haven’t seen any.)

That evening, I met up with my two favorite winos, Holly and Trish. They had just come from Goat. Sheep. Cow. and brought home quite the spread of cheese, crackers, peppers, olives and pears. My contribution was pita chips & hummus (duh), two bags of popchips, and flowers for Holly’s bday.IMAG1824IMAG1825

While at Holly's, Trish pointed out her baby-sized television from um, the 1980s?  imageAfter we gorged ourselves with “dinner” it was time for dessert. We walked over to Fulton Five for Limoncello…

IMAG1826

…and dessert. Pistachio gelato for Trish, pear Bread pudding for me, and tiramisu for Trish. Freaking delicious.IMAG1827

We then jetted to King St, bouncing around from O-Ku, to Hall’s, to Cocktail Club. On the walk home, I started skipping. Wine + Christina = silly. I had wayyyy too much fun with these girls and can’t wait for the next “event” where we say we’re not going out but then end up bar hopping.

Sunday: I spent the entire day glued to the television, something I rarely do. I couldn’t stop watching Parks and Recreation! Aziz, you still have my heart.image

So do you guys. XO!
