What I’m Loving Wednesday

1. Did you know if you soak gummy bears in rum, you get rummy bears?! I’m way too excited about this.

Imagine all the possibilities: gummy bears, worms, sharks! Trader Joe’s sells gummy penguins and I plan soaking those in some vodka this Summer.

2. Chuckles.

3. On Friday Amanda and I found out that we won the Bacardi Photo Contest!! In case you missed it, here’s the pic we entered, titled “Bacardi Babies.”

We won a 3-night stay at a house on IOP. We’re so excited to plan a fun girls weekend. Thanks to those of you who voted!

4. We also won tickets to go to the Bacardi Classic event but gave them to my friend Melissa who also entered the contest. She’s an awesome gal and totally deserved them. Before she left, she sent me this tweet:image

That made me so proud. I hope the Chick-fil-A helped soak up all the Bacardi. ;)

5. This ice cream is the reason why I’m going to work out extensively this Summer. This is a combination of 2 of the best ice cream flavors. Damn you, Breyer’s. You are good.

6. The intern left me this note on my second monitor at work.IMAG2606

Can anyone honestly tell me they don’t like that song?

7. I love Danielle for this tweet, reminding us to be so grateful for everything we have.image

Restaurant Review: Uno Más

Last week when I was at the Mustard Seed for dinner, the owner, Sal Parco, asked if I’d like to review one of his other restaurant’s new menu. Of course I was happy to oblige!

Monday night, Matt and I met Sal at Uno Más, the Dine With Sal Restaurant Group’s Mexican-themed restaurant. Uno Más’s menu contains some traditional Mexican items and other South of the Border dishes with a twist. Like all of the Dine With Sal restaurants, the menu relies heavily on fresh, local ingredients. Another positive aspect of Uno Más’ menu that differs from your average Mexican restaurant is the addition of lighter options, including several salads and vegetarian items.

In my opinion, one of the most important things a good Mexican restaurant must have is good guacamole. Good guacamole must use fresh avocadoes, not be over salted, and be a bit chunky, with a hint of lime juice. This guacamole epitomizes my perfect recipe. It is hands down the best guacamole I’ve had. I could have easily eaten it work a fork. Matt agreed that it was also the best he’s had. The portion, served in an authentic Mexican mortar is huge, to boot!DSC_0372 (1280x853)

We also had a side of Queso fundido: Chihuahua cheese, fire-roasted peppers, and onion, served with tortillas. This was incredibly rich and creamy. DSC_0374 (1280x853)

A lighter appetizer option is the Uno Más Salad – avocado, tomatoes, red onion, fresh cilantro, lime, and sea salt. Again, the avocado was very fresh, as was the sliced tomato. I’d be happy with this as a meal!DSC_0375 (1280x853)

One of my favorite items on the menu is the Grilled Shrimp Quesadilla with cilantro pesto, arugula, cheese, tomato, and avocado. I loved the arugula on top – there’s a nice twist! The shrimp, which were seared perfectly, were delicious. Qué sabor! DSC_0378 (1280x853)

The next entrée we sampled was a new addition to the menu. Here are the Carnitas: slow-roasted pork, cilantro, and onions served on corn tortillas with guacamole, tomato salsa, and salsa verde.DSC_0379 (853x1280)

My favorite entrée of the evening was the Spicy Coconut Shrimp: red onions, tomatoes, cilantro, chilies, an shrimp, simmered in a coconut milk over a crispy cheese grit cake. I thought the grit cake gave this dish a bit of Southern flair. We Southerners love our grits! DSC_0380 (1280x853)

Don’t think for a second that we didn’t take advantage of the excellent happy hour specials. What else would we wash all this food down with? The Happy Hour menu features $4 appetizer specials—your choice of  guacamole, queso fundido, nachos, or veggie taquitos. The drink specials are bottles of beer for $2 and margaritas for $3-6 depending on the liquor.

We decided to try two cocktails. Shown below are the Cactus Pear: cactus juice, fresh lime juice, and a house made citrus blend and the Mojito Anejo: Bacardi 8 year, fresh mint, and soda. Guess who ordered the pink drink?DSC_0381 (1280x853)

Matt did! How pretty is this cocktail? DSC_0382 (1280x853)

I, on the other hand, ordered the less frilly, but still delicious Mojito. Rest assured that the lethargic look on my face was due to intoxication by delicious food, not the beverage. Winking smileDSC_0384 (853x1280)Please also be amazed by the fact that there are no stains on my white shirt! I made it through the entire meal without spilling on myself. This is quite an achievement.

Our very helpful and attentive server insisted that we not leave without trying dessert. Per her recommendation, we tried the Churros topped with whipped cream and dulce de leche. Um, yum. They were very crispy and sugary! And cinnamon all over? Of course I loved it.DSC_0386 (1280x853)

And because my heart flutters when I see a dessert with bananas, I had to try the Banana Walnut Torte with crispy tortillas, whipped cream, and honey. I immediately dug out all of the banana slices – you can’t see them, but there were a bunch in there!DSC_0385 (1280x853)

If you are still reading (thank you!), I insist you give Uno Más a try. I suggest you skip on over after work for Happy Hour. The food and drink specials will take all your workday stresses away. And for your vegetarians out there, be sure to check out the Vegetable Quesadilla or the Spinach & Mushroom Enchiladas.

Thanks for having us, Sal! Big thank you to our server and manager as well! You guys were awesome.

Taco Mamacita, Ow Ow!

Yeah, that onomatopoeia was probably unnecessary but I just drank a bunch of coffee. On Sunday, Matt and I decided to continue our church hopping (chopping) adventures. We last went to Seacoast, which was a bit more contemporary than we like, but they also offer a traditional service in their chapel. We went to that service and it was much more our taste. Although I still found the music to be quite contemporary (can I get a choir?), I thoroughly enjoyed the sermon. Matt enjoyed the fact that the chapel wasn’t 800 degrees like the cove we sat in last time. Nobody wants to be sweating in church, and I surely don’t want to be smelling him.

After church, we decided to celebrate National Tequila Day. Church then tequila. Priorities, people! We went over to Sullivan's Island to try the new Taco Mamacita, which is based out of Tennessee. DSC_0306 (1280x835)

The Mexican-themed menu has your standard chips, salsa, guac, tacos, enchiladas and MARGARITAS! Woop woop!

On the left you will see theimageand on the right is theimage
Can you guess whose is whose? DSC_0303 (1280x915)

To start, we had theimage

I forgot to take a picture. I guess I was already tipsy. Just kidding.
As far as the tacos go, you can choose two of their twelve different tacos and add a side for $8.99. I ate this combo:imageimageimage
DSC_0304 (1280x853)Pickles on a taco!!! Yum. The Caribbean Taco was better; it had a ton of flavor. The black bean & corn salad could have used some salt but I figured I was getting enough in my beverage.

Matt’s combo:imageimageimageDSC_0305 (1280x853)

The picture is a bit blurry, but street corn had been grilled and topped with Mexican crema and cheese. Goodness. Way to fatten up a vegetable. Matt said he liked his Oy Vey taco better.

After lunch we drove to Costco, the store where we usually get in some kind of trouble. If you are a new reader, pleeeeeeeeeease check out the post where we purchased a giant 51” blow up ball. Sadly, we did not get into trouble this time. I did, however, take a bicycle for a spin down a few aisles. Matt looked at me like I was an idiot but I explained to him that this was Costco and I was just sampling it.
Matt bought stupid things like light bulbs and soap, while I bought necessities: pineapple and a lot of gum. At the rate I chew gum and share with the intern, this box will be gone in oh, two weeks? IMAG0321

The next stop on our (family?) adventure was Barnes & Noble so Matt could work and I could play. He gets mildly irritated when I take his picture while he’s trying to focus. This is just payback for things like decorating my room with my bras, making me sit in the trunk, hosing me down in the yard,  and stealing my phone to creep on my text messages.IMAG0325

My three brothers didn’t abuse me like this, so I guess I’m suffering now.

This is such a busy (but fun!) week for me. I will be:
  • pickle dog tasting
  • sampling new items on the Mustard Seed menu
  • going to the grand opening of Trader Joe’s
  • checking out the new J. Crew outlet
  • possibly seeing Friends with Benefits
What fun activities are on your agenda this week?
What type of abuse do I owe Matt?

Vespa Pizzeria, Boozin’, and Life Lessons

Last Friday, Rob and I took a much-needed lunch break at Vespa Pizzeria. Vespa is right on Daniel Island where we work, so within just a few minutes, we had escaped our daily duties and were indulging in cold brews. Cheers!

Rob ordered a beer that tasted like coffee. For such a dark beer, I thought it was pretty good.Wando-20110513-00203

I ordered a much lighter, peach-flavored beer called “Son of a Peach” by RJ Rockers Brewing Co. This was a perfect mid-day brewski. I could definitely enjoy a few more of these this Summer.

Please note the dude in the background. He’s so spread-eagle, it almost looks uncomfortable. Not to mention disgusting.Wando-20110513-00202

Vespa was running a lunch special that I couldn’t refuse: $10 for a small salad and pizza. I was relieved by this offer, as I wasn’t sure if I wanted one of the highly recommended salads or a pizza.

I chose the Arugula & Beets salad with balsamic vinaigrette, goat cheese and candied walnuts. This was my first beet salad of the day. I ended up having another goat cheese and beet salad at Lauren’s birthday dinner. Cannot resist a beet!Wando-20110513-00205

I also had the Margherita Pizza with tomato, mozzarella, basil, and EVOO. Rob said the first time he came here, he asked the server what “evoo” was. Hehe. My pizza was really good – the crust was thin and charred in some spots (love!) with lots of bubbles. There wasn’t a lot of sauce, which I need, so I asked for some on the side. I was a happy girl. Or was that the beer kicking in?Wando-20110513-00206

Rob ordered a standard Pepperoni Pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella and parmesan. We traded pieces, and his was really good too. Wando-20110513-00207

Both our pizzas were $10, which wasn’t bad, but those beers were $7 a piece. Eek!! No happy hour specials at lunch I guess. That could be to prevent stressed out individuals from getting trashed at lunch I guess?

After lunch, all I could do was laugh about this e-card that I found:

I will definitely be back to Vespa soon. Our server was super friendly and the atmosphere is very casual and cool. Plus, you can watch the guys cook your pizza! That’s always entertaining for me. Along with wood-fired pizza, their menu also has appetizers, sandwiches, and pastas. And, if you’re a Blackbaud employee, you get a 10% discount on food.

Lately, Lucy and I have been obsessively reading this Bits of Truth blog that my coworker introduced me to. It’s full of truthful quotes that will make you chuckle, smile, or just say ahhh. This is my current favorite:

I always try to find the good in each person and make friends every where I go. I rarely hold grudges and genuinely like people. I just don’t see the point of disliking people for silly reasons – you just never know who will become a close friend. Never, ever, judge.

I hope everyone’s week is going well! I’m already exhausted by my social schedule this week:

  • Tuesday: Guy Fieri show with Joe
  • Wednesday: Happy Hour with coworkers/friends at Leaf
  • Thursday: Frickle testing/dinner with Amanda & Jess
  • Friday: Riverdogs game with Margaret, Mariah, & Lucy (box tickets, yay!)
  • Saturday: beach or boating, please!

What’s your favorite quote or quote site?

Have you ever become friends with someone out of your social circle? Or someone you never thought you’d be friends with? Does making friends come easily to you, or do you like to stay in a close-knit group?

Lana Restaurant / Day #14

Photo Day #14 - A picture of someone you could never imagine your life without.DSCN0428Grammy. This lady is so awesome. See more on her here.

Remember last week when I mentioned that I’d be going to Lana with Rob and his parents? One of my lovely readers, Chelsea, posted this comment:

“OMG! I'm a hostess at Lana (and work Thursday nights) and have always wondered if you would ever stumble in and how I would react given you are a mini-celeb and I read your blog daily. Have you made reservations yet?”

She pretty much made my day. I immediately contacted her telling her when we’d be in so I could meet her.

The afternoon of, I made cookies to bring to Chelsea and Rob’s parents. Gotta send appreciation to bloggy lovers and nice parents! I used Emily’s recipe for Mini Peanut Butter Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies. Again, another perfect cookie recipe by such a fabulous baker. I adore her! :)DSC_2492.NEF

So back to Lana. The restaurant is located in a renovated building on the corner of Rutledge and Cannon. The Mediterranean style menu is full of decadent and unique elements that will appeal to everyone.

I wasn’t about to take out the giant camera until Rob’s mom encouraged me to take pictures. She had visited my blog when Rob did the sushi challenge and the Reindeer Run so she knew what was up. I loved it!

We started off with a cheese plate appetizer that featured 5 different cheeses served with sliced apple and walnuts. DSC_2477.NEFWe also ordered salads while deciding on our entrees. I chose the roasted vegetable salad with goat cheese and a lemon thyme vinaigrette. There were beets, cauliflower, and parsnips. I think I love beets more than your average person and it’s kind of fun to see your pee turn pink. TMI? Sorry.DSC_2478.NEFRob ordered an arugula salad with warm lentils in a bacon vinaigrette.DSC_2480.NEFNow you know I love chicken. Love love love. But whenever I eat out, I try to go out of my realm and order something crazy. So, I went with the server’s recommendation: seared duck breast and leg confit in a fig balsamic reduction with lentils and cabbage. Read again: fig balsamic reduction. This made the dish.imageDessert was a requirement. I was torn between two choices: blueberry sorbet and cinnamon gelato. Luckily, Rob wanted the cinnamon gelato, so I went with the sorbet. Both were excellent!DSC_2486.NEFDSC_2487.NEF

Just for giggles, Rob ordered a glass of Courvoisier with dessert.

Can we say potent? I nearly choked from smelling it. I took the tiniest sip ever (probably a teaspoon worth) and it burned. Badly. One glass of this could do some serious damage to your body, mind, and soul.

I drank coffee instead. :)

Huge hugs and thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Brenan for the lovely meal. Yall were so sweet and such great conversationalists. Hope to see you again soon!
