Feeling Hungry and Healthy? Purée Café Is Your Place.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been head over heels in love. But no, not for a boy. For a restaurant! Purée Café in Mt. Pleasant is a new gem that you must check out. Purée caters to those health-conscious individuals like myself, but will surely please the appetites of anyone smart enough to eat there. The menu is vegetarian, with many vegan and gluten-free options. Fillers, preservatives, artificial colors, and GMOs are no no’s at this joint. Go in hungry and leave feeling happy and healthy!

My first visit to Puree was with my friend Eric, a meat-loving man, who worried the vegetarian menu wouldn’t satisfy him. While we glanced over the menu, we ordered two juices: the Green Clean (spinach, kale, cucumber, celery, parsley, apple, and lemon)  and The Vitality (kale, beet, carrot, and peach).

We also couldn’t pass up the White Bean Dip with pita chips as an appetizer. I could not stop eating the dip!White Bean Dip from Puree. - Jonathan Boncek

We shared a salad too. Hey, we saw a lot of things we liked…The arugula, goat cheese, & roasted beet salad with toasted nuts & berries was another great starter -- sweet, savory, and summery. Pretty, isn’t it?Beets and Berry Salad from Puree. - Jonathan Boncek

The meat-eater immediately spotted two items that intrigued him:  the Blackened Jalapeno Cheddar Burger and the BBQ Tempeh Sausage Burger. Jenan, the owner, stopped at our table and convinced him to go with the latter. I chose the Mediterranean platter:  falafel  & hummus, served with mixed green tahini salad & toasted pita. I loved this dish because I got to try a little bit of everything. The falafel is a family recipe and the roasted red pepper hummus is better than anything you could buy in a store. The Mediterranean platter, with a pureed drink on the side, is packed with vibrant flavors. - Jonathan Boncek

After my visit with Eric, I was hooked. Thankfully, so is my good friend Danielle, and we’ve been going pretty often. One day we didn’t tell each other we were going for lunch and happened to go at the exact same time. I’m not sure if we were more embarrassed or amused that we caught each other. :)

On more than one occasion (like four, sue me), I’ve had the Black Bean Burrito. I can’t stop! Jenan urges me to try new things, but I keep going back to it. The whole wheat wrap is filled with black beans, greens, pico de gallo, and avocado.photo (11)

One afternoon, Danielle and I decided a cocktail with lunch was necessary. She got a margarita with organic tequila and I got a mixed drink with organic vodka, beet juice, strawberries, and lime. These were probably the healthiest cocktails we’ve ever encountered, ha!photo (13)

My most recent visit (when I spilled the beet juice everywhere) was for brunch. I had the The scrambler: tofu with cheese, tomatoes, kale, sweet & Yukon gold potatoes wrapped up in a whole wheat tortilla and a side of pesto. The tofu tasted pretty darn similar to eggs and I loved that there were two kinds of potato.photo 2 (3)

Locals, please check out this adorable café! Vegetarian or not, I know you’ll find something delicious. Stop in for a juice, eat one of the awesome entrees, chat w/ the sweet owner, and leave with a freshly-baked dessert. The vegan chocolate chip cookies are ridiculously good. Trust me, I’ve had a couple. ;)

Check out Purée on their website, facebook, or twitter. Tell Jenan I sent you!!

Blog Failure? Check!

So, Saturday morning I woke up and impulsively decided that it was time to be self-hosted. Having done very little research on what self-hosting would entail, I signed up for 2 years of service with Bluehost. Um, what? Not my smartest decision. Without getting into too many details, the blogger –> self hosted with wordpress conversion did not go well. I may or may not have had several mini breakdowns and had it not been for good friends (ahem, Julie), I probably would have cried.

Conclusion 1: I need to do some research or pay someone to do the conversion.

Conclusion 2: I am not a geek. I am weird, but not a geek. Bummer.

I was so close to giving up but then remembered how much JOY blogging brings me, mostly because of all of YOU wonderful readers. Every single comment, email, or tweet makes me smile – so keep ‘em coming!

Enough about that! Let’s talk about happy stuff.

Like new restaurants! On Friday night, I went to Biggie’s Southern Gastropub with Matt and Carlton. Biggie’s was opened by the same people who opened Granville’s and is in the same spot. Their new restaurant features a small, Southern menu with creative cocktails, draft beer, and wine. The atmosphere is casual, and the patio out front is perfect for the coming fall weather. They also play great music!image

All three of us had the John’s Island Mule: Vodka, John’s Island Cantaloupe juice, Lime, and Sweatman’s Ginger Beer. Sooooooo good. Sorry for not taking a picture! We also started with the Lobster Crab Dip.DSC_0517 (960x640)

For dinner, I had Slow Roasted Pulled Pork Sandwich with blue cheese slaw and a side of homemade chips. The pork was really good, as were the chips, but I was a little disappointed that the pork was served on what appears to be Wonderbread. Bread is cheap – I think they could’ve stepped it up a notch. Back to their positive qualities, the service was great. Both the manager and our waitress were attentive and helpful. Our waitress was more than happy to give us drink recommendations and was patient when I couldn’t decide right away.

The rest of the night was spent at various bars, including The Cocktail Club. On the menu, I immediately spotted this: image

Sounds like my dream drink, right? Not so much. It was a too spicy and um, juicy? It was weird. Please note the arm party AND the seersucker pants in the background. Seersucker pants at the bar! HOLY CHARLESTON BOY.DSC_0523 (960x768)

At our second stop, Closed for Business, it was time to switch to beer. I used to not be a fan of this place, but love that they have this on tap:

Maybe, maybe not.

We can discuss the rest of the weekend tomorrow. I’m exhausted. NIGHT!

Husk – One of The Best Restaurants in Charleston

Last night, Santo and I finally made it to Husk for dinner. We had been planning on going ever since its opening last November and after hearing many positive reviews, we were psyched to finally go. Husk’s cuisine is modern and playful and only local ingredients are allowed through the restaurant’s doors. “If it doesn’t come from the South, it’s not coming through the door,” says Chef Sean Brock. Typically, Southern cuisine is not my favorite, but it’s always fun to be daring with new foods.

Husk is not only known for its creative dishes, but also for their innovative cocktails. Again, cocktails are not my usual beverage of choice, but I could not resist trying one. I ordered the Champagne and Strawberries - Classic elegance with a modern twist - Champagne, Domaine de Canton-soaked strawberries, lemongrass and lavender simple syrup with black pepper. DSC_2752
Loooooooved this. I was worried that it would be too fruity, but it was perfect. The lemongrass was what gave it such dimension.

Santo opted for the The Southern Screwdriver - Not Just For Breakfast anymore - Jalapeno macerated vodka, basil syrup, fresh squeezed orange juice and orange bitters.DSC_2753

This was the spiciest drink I’ve ever tasted! I could not have finished it, but Santo really enjoyed it.

While deciding on appetizers, we were served four fresh yeast rolls with bacon butter. DSC_2755

As usual, we ordered two appetizers. First we had the Glazed Blueridge Bison Short Ribs with Parsnip Farotto and Pickled Mushrooms. These were incredible. They were placed in a barbecue teriyaki sauce that was just divine. And the pickled mushrooms were no joke – sour! DSC_2760

Our second appetizer was Dave’s Wood Fired Clams with Surry County Sausage, Spinach and Spring Onions, Crispy Bread. How cute is this serving bowl? The clams were equally delicious with a really lovely, light broth. DSC_2756

While we were looking at the entrees, I told Santo that I wished there was another fish option other than catfish. He replied, “There is. The Sheepshead.” I looked at him, puzzled, and said, “Oh gosh. I thought they meant an actual sheep’s head.” I couldn’t have been more wrong.
My chosen dish was the SC Spear Caught Sheepshead with Sweet Pea Big Grit “Risotto”, Charred Baby Vidalia Onions and Ramp Broth. DSC_2762

This might be my new favorite fish – very light and moist. The risotto was perfectly tender and the fresh peas added a nice crunch.

Santo ordered SC Beef Tenderloin, with Red Creamer Potatoes, Mepkin Abbey Oyster Mushrooms, Broccoli and Spring Garlic Cream. Although he ordered the tenderloin medium, it came out nearly mooing. It was a bit on the chewy side and the sides weren't too exciting. DSC_2764

And of course we ordered dessert. Within 2 seconds of seeing the dessert menu, we both knew we wanted the bread pudding with orange crème. It wasn’t bad, but different than what I was expecting. Neither of us cared for the orange crème sauce, but that’s not a favorite flavor of either of us. DSC_2766

Overall, I was very happy with my experience. Our server, Graham, was wonderful. He was attentive, extremely helpful, and remained cheerful when we asked him many questions about the restaurant. The inside of the restaurant was gorgeous, and the mood very relaxed. I was worried that the staff may be pretentious, but this was not at all the case. I would go back in a heartbeat and am very excited to try their brunch! More cocktails, please!DSC_2769
